ICE cold water temperatures weren’t enough to deter the Myall Masters Swimming Club who competed at the NIB Hunter Festival of Sport swim meet earlier this month.
The team met strong competition from 22 other clubs at Kurri Kurri Aquatic Centre on 11 July but were prepared from their regular training sessions at Raymond Terrace pool.
Seven swimmers jumped on the blocks to represent the Myall Masters with Dorothy Pryor swimming in her first meet at the prime age of 79 years. Dorothy swam strongly in the 25m breastroke taking out second place.
Peter Kendall, 75-79 years, swam strongly and continually inspired the younger members of the club with his determination and ability.
Peter Brown having swum the 400m and 100m medley had to immediately back-up and swim in a 50m freestyle relay. Club president, Peter, showed his leadership qualities by digging deep to give strong performances.
John Coles, 65-69 years, managed to swim three events while still feeling the effects of the flu. John swims three times a week at Forster Aquatic Centre is preparing to swim in the 1500 m freestyle at the State Championships at the end of July. Peter Kellaway, 70-74 years, swam strongly in each of his events with little evidence of being another victim of the flu. Terry Hay, 65-69 years, who has been regularly training over Winter gained first place in the 25 m butterfly. Leon Bobako, 60-64 years, added the state record for the 25m breastroke event to his list of National and State Records for this year. The Myall Masters entered three teams in a knockout Brace Relay while John Coles and Peter Kendall were knocked out in the first round. Peter Brown and Leon Bobako, Peter Kellaway and Terry Hay made it to the finals.
