Masters dive into 2008 competition

30 Jan, 2008 09:15 AM
The first swim meet for 2008 was held at Gosford Swim Centre with 230 swimmers from 23 clubs attending.

The weather was drizzling right throughout the meet however it didn’t stop the two Myall Masters representatives from swimming well.

Peter Kellaway swam in the 70 to 74years and came fourth in the 50m backstroke and third in a hot field in the 50m freestyle.

Peter did a personal best in the 50m freestyle in a very credible time of 36 seconds. Leon Bobako swam in the 50m and 100m breastroke coming in first and third in the 50m freestyle.

Open Water Swimming

January proved to be a good month for club members Barb Gurr and Helen Dauncey in the recently held Bay to Breakers open water swim hosted by the Tea Gardens Hawks Nest Surf Lifesaving Club.

Both members won their age group and continue to display commitment to their fitness regime.

A week later Helen Dauncey swam in the 3km swim at Whale Beach finishing strongly.

“(It was just) beautiful out there in the ocean,” Helen said.

Not to be outdone Barb Gurr swam in the 5km at Glenbawn Dam during the Australia Day weekend coming in second in the 15 years and over.

Barb’s hurdles of cold, dirty water and fogged up goggles helped make the swim a real challenge.

The goggles are now somewhere at the bottom of the lake.

Pool swim competition

The next pool swim meet is at Cessnock on February 9 and a strong contingent has entered.

The performances of each swimmer adds to the State Club Point Score Competition for 2008.

In the 2007 competition Myall Masters came in sixth out of 13 clubs in division three.

The divisions are determined by the size of the club.

Currently we have 36 members ranging from the social to the competitive swimmers.

A number of our members have achieved National top 10 rankings for performances during 2007.

They are Leon Bobako, Peter Brown and Barb Gurr.

NSW top 10 achievers are John Beatty, Leon Bobako, Peter Brown, Peter Kellaway, Peter Kendall, and Richard Norman in the mens, whilst Barb Gurr, Yvonne Kendall and Toni Petterson represented the women of the club.

A big congratulation to Richard Norman for achieving his first state top 10 ranking in the 80 to 84years age group and Yvonne Kendall in the 75 to 79years after having learnt to swim at the beginning of 2007.

The club is certainly proud of you.

The club welcomes any one from 20 years of age and as you can see we have no upper limit.

Club nights are held each Monday from 5.30 to 7pm at the Tea Gardens Pool.
