THE Myall Masters Swimming Club’s John Coles and Leon Bobako hit the pool at the State Long Course Championship at Olympic Park earlier this month.
Swimming in his first state championship in the 65-69 year age group, John challenged himself to swim in the 200m freestyle event.
John, who is a long distance swimmer, flew down the first lap and then had to work hard to complete the next three laps.
His first lap was as fast as he had ever swum a 50m race and he was wondering after the event why someone had put a fridge on his back in the latter part of the race.
John was certain he could swim an even faster time in his 50m freestyle event and proved this by cutting four seconds off his best time. Meanwhile Leon had a solid meet with swims in the 50m butterfly and 100m breastroke backing up to swim the 50m breastroke and 200m individual medley. Leon collected two gold and two silver medals.
