Swimmers shine

19 Jul, 2007 07:56 AM
The Hunter Festival of Sport swimming meet was held on Saturday, June 30, in a half-day carnival at the 25-metre indoor pool at Kurri Kurri.

The carnival attracted 25 Clubs and 150 swimmers from over the State, which provided plenty of competition for our club's representatives.

Our three swimmers proved extremely competitive.

Myall Masters gained a total of 83 points out of a maximum of 90 points towards the inter-club point score.

Points were allocated on positions achieved for each event swum, with 10 points for first, nine for second, eight for third and so on.

Peter Brown commenced his contribution to the point score by coming a credible second in the 60-64 years, 400-metre freestyle, improving his placing from last year's swim meet.

Strong performances followed in the 25-metre breastroke, where Peter placed third and first in the 100-metre individual medley.

Chris Marko celebrated her birthday by coming first in the 50-metre breastroke and second in the 25-metre breastroke and 100-metre individual medley.

Club coach, Leon Bobako, swam in the 55-59 age group, winning the 50-metre butterfly and placing second in the 50-metres and 100-metres breastroke.

Peter and Leon also teamed up in the two-by-50-metre freestyle brace relay knockout event.

The brace relay requires a team to swim within two seconds of their nominated time.

Both members swam successfully through the heats and semi-final to reach the final.

The winner of the final was the team that swam closest to their nominated time.

Although, Peter and Leon were first to the wall, they had the adrenaline pumping a little too hard and swam too fast to be declared the winners.

Our members gave of their best at the meet, although their swimming preparation has been minimal due to the wild weather, lack of pool facilities and illness.

There has been a regular attendance at Monday night circuit training for members and friends with many of the swimmers showing their skills on dry land.

The session starts at 6pm and keeps participants puffing and panting for the full hour.

The general public are welcome to attend the circuit class, which is under the direction of Leon Bobako who is a qualified fitness instructor.

The cost for the class is $5 for Myall Masters Swimming Club members and $6 for non-members.
