A TALENT for high jump and athletics has given 15 year old Tea Gardens resident Shannon Markham the opportunity to head overseas for the first time.
After coming seventh at State for high jump, Markham received a letter in the mail inviting her to Vancouver Canada and Los Angeles America in June next year to compete in the Travel Options Australia competition.
"I will be competing in high jump, triple jump, discus and 100 metres," she said.
Markham's strongest athletic talent lies in long jump for which she came first in her age group at both Regional and Zone competitions this year.
"I've been training really hard," she said.
She is trained by Charles Ringuet and is also part of Tea Gardens Little Athletics. She runs five days a week and practices her high jump each weekend. She even has a high jump bar set up in the backyard of her family home.
In order to raise the $6825 cost of the trip the Markhams will be running a cake stall each Saturday morning out the front of the sports store at Hawks Nest.
They will also have an account set up at Tea Gardens Holiday Coast Credit Union for any donations from the community for her trip.
