AFTER 18 months of improving the Myall River Camping Area, the Lions Club of Bulahdelah has put forward a proposal to re-name the reserve Lions Park Bulahdelah.
A report from the Great Lakes Council said council officers fully supported the name change with the Bulahdelah community already referring to the reserve as the Lions Park. President of the Lions Club of Bulahdelah Arthur Baker said before the group started work at the reserve there was "nothing but lantana and overgrowth".
With the help of Great Lakes Council members of the club were inducted to maintenance and regeneration works an provided with equipment to do the job. The main purpose of the upgrade was to provide an area where motorists can pull in, stop and take a break off the highway.
"They pulled the rest stop at the golf club north of Bulahdelah so we want to duplicate that," Mr Baker said. The area is now used for overnight camping mainly during school holidays with people stopping over for the night. Mr Baker said the renaming of the reserve would help give the club "more interest in maintaining and upgrading" the area. The council will first advertise the proposed change for a period of 28 days until April 11. If no objections are received the application will be forwarded to the Geographical Names Board to rename the reserve Lions Park Bulahdelah.
