Bronze in triple jump

SHANNON Markham is an athlete competing beyond her years.

The 15-year-old Bulahdelah Central School student recently competed in Canada at the Travel Options Australia athletics competition taking part in multiple track and field events with others much older then her.

Her best results were in the 16-to-19 years triple jump where she took bronze.

Markham also finished third in relay, fifth in both her high and long jump competitions and placed seventh in discus.

Overall, Markham collected five ribbons for her efforts.

"It was a great experience for Shannon to compete in the higher age groups, although it was tough she came out with a bronze," her mother, Karen said.

Earlier this year the family held fundraisers for the athlete in a bid to raise close to $7000 for her trip.

Mrs Markham said she wanted to thank everyone who supported her daughter in this "once in a lifetime experience competing in Canada".

Meanwhile, the pedigree of athleticism looks set to run right through the Markham family with her older brother Mitchell a past cross country competitor.

Younger sibling Megan and brother William are also looking to one day fulfil their athletic endeavours.

Markham is getting set for the state athletics in Sydney after winning the high jump at regional level three weeks ago.
